Under Armour Men’s Basketball Player of the Week – Week 11

Markieth Brown Jr., Shadle Park HS / Spokane, WA., scored an average of 27.5 points per game (51.3 FG%) to help Everett to wins over North Region playoff contenders, Whatcom and Peninsula. Brown Jr. also turned in 11 assists, 4 rebounds, a steal and a block.

"Markieth is an excellent student with an outstanding GPA, said EvCC head coach Mike Trautman. "He also works with local youth at the North Everett Boys and Girls club helping kids with their basketball skills.  Markieth has been very consistent during league play with 10 straight games of 20 or more points scored.  His ability to score from the 3pt arch, inside, and from the FT line makes him very difficult to defend.

SOPHOMORE FORWARD

Adiya Jones-Smith, Tulalip Heritage HS / Marysville, WA., led Skagit Valley to two crucial wins in the North region defeating 4th place Olympic College on Wednesday and knocked 10th-ranked Bellevue out of first place with a win on Saturday.   Jones-Smith scored 24 points in each of the two games shooting 63% from the field, was 14-16 from the free throw line in the two games to go along with 16 rebounds.   She also had 6 steals against Bellevue.

"Adiya, a special player who is outstanding at both ends of the court, led the team to victory against two tough opponents on the road this past week, said SVC head coach Steve Epperson. "Adiya is shooting 53% from the field and averaging 15.4 points per game.  She has led the team back into contention for the North Region Title with her outstanding play."

Steven Fair, Alliance HS / Fresno, CA., led the Saints to upset victories over #6-ranked Clackamas in OT and Umpqua (14-8). Fair averaged 21.5 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to go with 3 steals and a block.

"Steven has work extremely hard to develop his game and has been a great leader not only on the court but also in the locker room for us," said MHCC head  coach John Hawley. "He has continued to improve his overall game on both ends of the floor and has become more consistent on the offensive end. It is a pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with Steven over the past 2 years."

Bria Thames, Westview HS / Portland, OR., led top-ranked and undefeated Umpqua to wins over 7th-ranked Lane and Mt. Hood. Thames averaged 24 points on a blistering 79.2% shooting and 9.5 rebounds per game to go with 4 assists and 3 steals.

On the season, Thames' 58.4% shooting is 4th in the league. She is also 8th in total rebounds (5th in offensive rebounds) and 14th in points per game.

"Bria had a great week for us averaging 24 points a game while shooting nearly 80% from the floor and 81% from the free throw line, said UCC head coach Dave Strlcklin. "There’s a really old adage that says the cream rises to the top and that’s what happened this past week. Bria took complete charge of both games and the rest of us just went along for the ride."

Terrell Brown Jr., Garfield HS / Seattle, WA., has been a force all season for the Dolphins averaging a conference leading 29.2 points per game and steals with 58 (3.4 spg). This past week Brown Jr. netted an average 28.0 ppg to go with 20 rebounds and 10 assists.

"Terrell Brown is a great player, a great student and even a better teammate, said SCC head coach Aaron Mackey. "As a freshman he has flourished in a leadership roll and our team is better for it."

Nicole Hermosillo-Wright, North Salinas HS / Salinas, CA., led the 5th-ranked Cougars to a double digit win over Clark before falling to top-ranked and undefeated Umpqua by 5 points. Hermosillo-Wright averaged 33 points, 8 rebounds while collecting 4 assists, 5 steals and a pair of blocked shots. She is 6th in the conference in in points per game and 7th in steals.

"Nicole had a great week for us this past week scoring 33 points in both of our games," CCC head coach Jim Martineau,. "She has been key for us getting off to a good start in the Southern Region.  In our 7 region games she is averaging 24 points and 5 rebounds per game while shooting over 50% from the floor.

Gio Jackson, Todd Beamer HS / Federal Way, WA., helped the 2nd-ranked Trojans to a pair of wins over Bellevue and sixth-ranked Edmonds. Jackson averaged 24.5 points per game and shot a terrific 15-16 (93.8%) from the charity stripe. He also tallied 22 rebounds, 13 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks.

"Gio is our leader on and off the floor," said Everett head coach Mike Trautman. "He doesn't take possessions off and attacks the rims as well as anyone in the NWAC.  He is currently 4th in the NWAC in rebounding at 8.9 rebounds a game, as a 5'10 PG.  His rebounding along with excellent on ball defense, helps our team get stops.  Off the floor, Gio is a good student in the Engineering department and the student athletic coordinator for Student Life."

Cierra Jo McKeown, Touchet HS / Touchet, WA., led the 2nd-ranked Warriors to double digit wins over Yakima Valley (13-5), North Idaho (11-7) and Blue Mountain. McKeown averaged 26.3 points per game on 61.2% shooting (54.8% from the three on 31 shots). She also added 12 rebounds, 16 assists and 3 steals.

“Cierra Jo had a very solid week in three East Region games," said WWCC head coach Bobbi Hazeltine. "Her near 26 point average was impressive, but even more impressive was her shooting percentage.  Cierra has been consistent like that all year for us.  She put in hours of time this summer, and her dedication is really paying off.”

Cesar Sandoval, Moses Lake HS / Moses Lake, WA., helped the 7th-ranked Sasquatch to wins over Big Bend and #3-ranked Yakima Valley. Sandoval tallied an average of 23.0 points on a 65.5% shooting percentage and 10.5 rebounds per game.

“Cesar had a dominating week for our team that helped us get two league wins over Big Bend and Yakima Valley!," exclaimed CCS head coach Jeremy Groth. "He has been very dependable for us all year long.  He handles his responsibilities in the classroom as well with a very strong GPA. Cesar is a great teammate who does whatever he can for our group and program to be successful!”

Jade Skidmore, West Jefferson HS / Terreton, ID., led the 2nd-ranked Warriors to double digit wins over Wenatchee Valley (11-6) and Big Bend (13-5). Skidmore tallied 18.5 points per game with 11 assists and 3 steals. She also recorded a rare triple double in the game against the Vikings, netting 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

"Jade had a great floor game against Big Bend, completely controlling the game with her triple-double," said WWCC head coach Bobbi Hazeltine. "In each game this week, Jade was in double figures in both points and rebounds.  For a point guard, the rebounding stat is pretty impressive.  Jade sees the floor as well as any player I have coached.  She has had a solid season but a particularly great weekend against three very good East Region teams."

Gabe Garrett, Jefferson HS / Portland, OR., led PCC to a pair of wins to improve the top-ranked Panthers to a 13-2 season record. Garrett averaged 27 points and 6 rebounds on the week.

"Gabe had a strong week in leading our team to two big wins to start the league season," Said PCC head coach Tony Broadous. "He continues to get better in all aspects of the game. A returning First Team All Conference player as a freshman, he came back this year even better. Gabe can score in a variety of ways, he is really crafty and plays hard at all times."

Kayce Mock, Sutherlin HS / Sutherlin, OR., led CCC to a pair of wins to improve the fourth-ranked Cougars to a 10-3 season record. Mock averaged 12pts, 15.5 rebounds and 5 blocks for the week. She is currently the league's rebound leader averaging 14.5 boards a game and is second in blocks averaging 3.1 a contest.

“Kayce has had a great year for us so far," said CCC head coach Jim Martineau. "She leads the NWAC in rebounds at over 14 per game and is 2nd in block shots with 3 per game.   She is also averaging 14 points a game.   She plays multiple positions on offense and has the ability to defend every person on the floor.   I look forward to more of the same from Kayce as the year continues.”

Isaiah Gentry, Milwaukie HS / Milwaukie, OR, led the Cougars to big wins over #2-ranked Walla Walla (73-70 OT), #5 Edmonds (99-85) and Centralia. The 6'4" forward average 16.7 points, 7.7 rebounds while chipping in 7 assists and 6 steals. Gentry, who was named the pool 'B' MVP, also went perfect from the charity stripe in 13 attempts.

“Isaiah is a returning starter who gives this year’s Cougar team confidence and courage," said CCC head coach Clif Wegner. "He is a big guard who provides inside and outside scoring as well as leadership, rebounding and all-around play. 

Off the court he is a lighthearted, happy go lucky young person that always has a smile on his face. But when it’s time to practice or play basketball he is a very focused competitor. His focus and confidence during key moments have inspired his team with energy this season. He is an unselfish team player and his teammates regard him very highly as a valued teammate. 

In the classroom, he is a solid student with a good GPA finishing his associates degree with the business in process. He wants to play two more years of college basketball and his long-term interest is to work in the food industry.”

Jordan Stotler, Roseburg HS / Roseburg, OR, earns her fifth NWAC player of the week honor (four in 2016-17) by leading the top-ranked Riverhawks to three wins in the Lower Columbia Holiday Classic. The 6' 4" forward averaged 17 points, 14.4 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 4.3 blocks per game. Stotler shined in the championship game vs. #5-ranked North Idaho with 14 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 blocks to lead UCC to a 74-70 win.

“Jordan is one of the most complete players in the entire NWAC and she proved that fact once again this past weekend at the LCC Holiday Classic," said UCC head coach Dave Stricklin. "In three games against outstanding, well coached teams Jordan averaged 17 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to win, even if that means doing a little bit of everything!”

Zach Walton, Morton HS / Morton, WA, helped lead the 5th-ranked Tritons to three wins, including a 22 point victory over #2-ranked Walla Walla. Walton led the way with 23.6 ppg on 65.9% shooting, including 29 points over the Warriors. He also tallied 20 rebounds, 10 assists, 5 blocked shots, 4 steals and only had 3 turnovers.

“Zach has been huge for us all year helping us in all areas of the game," said Edmonds head coach Kyle Gray. "He just simply focuses on getting better everyday whether it is practice or a game.  Zach is also a great leader and teammate that makes everyone around him better as well.  It is no surprise to anyone in our program that he is having the success he is.”

Kamri Von Oelhoffen, Richland HS / Richland, WA, helped propel the Yaks to 3 victories at the Everett Crossover Tournament this past week. She averaged 28.3 ppg, including a 45 point performance against #3-ranked Everett. Von Oelhoffen also filled the stat sheet averaging 6.6 rebounds, 7.6 assists and 3.6 steals per game.

“Kamri helped lead the Lady Yaks to a 3-0 weekend at the Everett Crossover Tournament highlighted by her 45 point game against Everett," said YVC head coach Adam Strom. "Kamri has done a little bit of everything to help the Lady Yaks basketball team. The 5'7 guard continues to adjust her game to the collegiate level and has been a welcomed addition to Yakima Valley College. Kamri realizes the importance of hard work both on and off the court and has learned the importance of being coachable.”

Cesar Sandoval, Moses Lake HS / Moses Lake, WA, averaged 26.7 ppg (66.7% shooting) and 9.3 rebounds per game in three games last week to lead the Sasquatch to the Dale Bates Tournament Championship. Sandoval was also red hot from the charity stripe hitting 17-18 free throws (94.4%) and was named the tournament MVP.

“Cesar played a big part in leading our group to a 3-0 record and winning the Dale Bates Championship this past weekend down at Lane CC," said CCS head coach Jeremy Groth. "He scored and rebounded the ball very well and also hit a game winner as time expired in one of the games.  In the championship game against Umpqua he finished with 35 points (13-18 from the field) and 9 rebounds. We are happy to see all the hard work and time he has put in paying off!”

Alexis Biggerstaff, Ketchikan HS / Ketchikan, AK, averaged 21.7 ppg, 5.7 rebounds, 3.3 assist and 2.0 steals in three games at the Everett Classic tournament. Her efforts helped lead Everett to the tournament championship while Alexis was named the MVP.

"Lexi was instrumental in Everett CC's championship run in this weekend's 22nd Annual Everett Classic tournament," said Trojan head coach Chet Hovde. "She was named MVP of the tournament. Her steady defense set the tone all weekend for the Trojans' fast paced attack. Scoring 29 pts in the championship game vs Spokane, was her weekend high, also adding 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Her weekend consisted of 65 pts, 17 rebounds, 10 assists and 6 steals. Biggerstaff led the Trojans to their first tournament championship in the 22 seasons of hosting this tournament."

RayQuan Evans, Skyview HS / Billings, MT, averaged 21.5 ppg in two games last week to lead the Cardinals in scoring. Evans also added 16 boards, 16 assists and 6 steals. He is now 4th in league scoring with a 24.5 ppg average and 8th in rebounds with a 8.3 rpg average.

"RayQuan is turning into the leader of our team," exclaimed NIC head coach Corey Symons. "With so many new players,(9 freshman and only 1 returner) he is helping set the tone for us on both ends of the floor!"

Brenda Akoto, Bothell HS / Bothell, WA, averaged 20.3 ppg on 62.1% FG average in three games last week. She also had 27 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

"Brenda came into the season this year with the mindset that there was unfinished business to take care of," said BC head coach Mel Stubblefield. "Which she has shown by playing composed and consistent in these first games of the season. Brenda is the type student-athlete any college coach would want. Not only does she take care of business on the court but as well in the class room with a very high GPA. The Bellevue College family is looking forward to seeing more of Brenda's success this year."

Nygil Carr, Phyllis Wheatley HS / Houston, TX, averaged 29.8 ppg in five games last week to establish the leagues' top scoring average. He also tallied 23 assists, 22 rebounds and a conference second best 14 steals.

"Nygil finished as the leading scorer of the Pierce College Thanksgiving Tournament (23.7 ppg) and was named to the all-tournament team," said Cougar associate head coach Brian Stamme. "In the Cougars second game this year against Christian Faith, a semi-pro team, he poured in 51 points which is a new Clackamas school record.  Nygil is an outstanding representative of student athletes in the NWAC excelling on and off the court.  He currently has a solid GPA and is on track to graduate this spring with his associates’ transfer degree.":

Alexia Thrower, Canyon Springs HS / Nevada, LV, led the Grays Harbor Chokers to a 4-1 record last week. She averaged 29.2 ppg on a 60.4% FG percent average including a 41 point performance against Columbia Basin. She also averaged 10.2 rebounds per game with three double-doubles. Filling the stats sheet, Alexia also tallied 16 steals, 17 assists and 4 blocks.

"Alexia came in this year with improvements in both her game and leadership skills," said GHC head coach Chad Allan. She is a super athlete with a competitive spirit and worked all summer on her shooting range. She also takes care of her academics and has a good GPA. Alexia is a great fit for our program and her teammates. I look forward to more positive things coming from her this season."

Alexia Thrower, Canyon Springs HS / Las Vegas, NV., helped the Grays Harbor Chokers pull off a convincing upset win over 9th-ranked Centralia College 74-50.

Thrower ripped the nets for 26 points on 82% field goal average to go with 8-8 shooting from the free throw line. She also added 4 assists, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 steals to completely filled the stat sheet.

Alexia is currently 12th in scoring (18.6 ppg), 12th in rebounds (9.4 rpg), 14th in field goal percentage (50%), 17th in assists (3.6 apg) and 20th in steals (2.2 spg).

Luke Chavez, Sir Francis Drake HS / Marin, CA, filled the stat sheet last week in a game against Lower Columbia. He tallied 28 points on 50% shooting including 71% from the arc to go with 6 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 steals.

Chavez is currently 7th in assists (4.4 apg), 8th in steals (2.2 spg) and 5th in 3Pt Field goal percentage (47.1%).

He has been instrumental in leading 2nd-ranked South Puget Sound to a regular season West Region Championship (13-1) and an overall record of 22-5.

Cayla Jones, White Swan HS / White Swan, WA., turned in two consecutive weeks of stellar play to help lead the Columbia Basin Hawks to a playoff berth. In three games this past week she averaged 25.0 ppg on 46% shooting, 8.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists 2.8 steals and 1.7 blocks.

Her signature game was in a 82-68 win over #3 Spokane where Jones tallied 29 points, 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists and a block.

Jones is currently 14 in scoring (17.1 ppg), 6th in steals (2.6 spg), 7th in assists (4.5 apg) and 2nd in free throw percentage (85.7%)

Gio Jackson, Todd Beamer HS / Federal Way, WA, was highly instrumental in a pair of wins for the Everett last week, keeping the Trojans in the playoff hunt.

Jackson tallied a 20.5 ppg average on 65% shooting (67% from the arc) to go with 7.5 assists per game and 9.5 rebounds per game.

His highlight was a triple-double against Skagit Valley where Jackson registered 27 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds to go with a steal and two blocks.

Jackson is currently 16th in the league in assists with 4.0 apg average.

Jordan Stotler, Roseburg HS / Camas Valley, OR, put on a dominating performance against #3-ranked Lane tallying a rare triple-double with 24 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks to go with 3 assists and 2 steals in the Riverhawks' 89-56 rout of the defending NWAC champions.

On the week, the four time player of the week averaged 18.0 ppg, 18.0 rbg, 7.5 blocks per game, 3.0 assists per game and 2.5 steals per game.

On the season, Stotler is 1st in blocks (4.1 bpg), 2nd in points (23.0 ppg), 3rd in rebounds (12.9 rpg), 13th in steals (2.3 spg), 15th in assists (3.7 apg) and 17th in free throw percentage (76.9%).

Sam Dowd, Gonzaga Prep School / Seattle, WA, turned in a pair of great performances in convincing wins against #7 Big Bend (101-82) and top-ranked Spokane (93-71).

Dowd averaged 23 points a game on a blistering 59% shooting performance, including 55% from the arc to go with 9 assists per game and 4.5 rebounds per game.

On the season, Dowd is currently 1st in assists (7.2 apg) and 15th in scoring (18.2 ppg).

Uju Chibuogwu, Shorecrest HS / Seattle, WA, shot 49% for an average of 24.5 ppg while averaging 6 assists, 13 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks in wins over Whatcom and 7th-ranked Peninsula.

On the season, Chibuogwu is currently 11th in scoring (19.4 ppg), 8th in rebounding (9.7 rpg), 4th in blocks (2.3 bpg) and 16th in free throw average (77.6%).

Ryun Gibson, Gladstone HS / Gladstone, OR, was hot in the paint against Southwestern Oregon Saturday hitting 12 of 14 for 86% field goal shooting and 31 points while adding 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.

Gibson is currently 13th in rebounds (8.1 rpg), 8th in blocks (1.4 bpg) and 19th in field goal average (54.9%) on the season.
