Luke Chavez Honored As GNAC Player Of The Week
PORTLAND, Ore. - After leading Saint Martin's to three out-of-state road victories, including upsetting No. 7 Cal Baptist, Luke Chavez was announced Player of the Week by the GNAC office on Monday.
The junior guard averaged 19.0 points per game, 2.3 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists per game while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and an impressive 56.3 percent beyond the arc. Chavez added nine steals and one block in the Saints' three games.
Chavez started the week off with a 14-point, 4-assist, 4-steal performance against Cal State Monterey Bay. He began the Cal Baptist Thanksgiving Classic by setting a career-high in points (26) against Academy of Art on 7-for-14 shooting and 4-of-7 from deep. Chavez was perfect at the free throw line (8-for-8), while recording four rebounds, three steals, one block and one assist. Chavez capped off the week with 17 points, five assists and two steals as Saint Martin's upset No. 7 Cal Baptist, 93-88, on the road.
Chavez improved his season averages to 17.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.3 apg, 2.3 spg, while shooting 54.5 percent from the field and 53.6 percent beyond the arc. The Player of the Week award is the first for Chavez.
Luke Chavez captained the 2016-17 South Puget Sound men’s basketball team that went 23-6 and won the NWAC West Region. Chavez was the 2016-17 NWAC West Region MVP and was a finalist for NWAC player of the year. During his Sophomore season Chavez averaged 15.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.3 steals.
