North Idaho eyes second straight NWAC Title with 85-78 win over Lane
Game #1 of the NWAC Men’s Basketball Semi-Final featured the #1 ranked North Idaho Cardinals against the #2 ranked Lane Community College Titans. In a great game, the Cardinals defeated the Titans 85-78.
Lane’s Lezjon Bonds 13 points helped the Titans build a 20-16 lead at the midway point of the first half. The Cardinals then methodically answered back and took the lead on a three-point basket just under the five-minute mark. T
he teams traded three-point baskets and the lead the last three minutes of the half. A three-point basket by Lanes’ Rodney Hounshell at the buzzer gave lane a 41-40 half-time lead.
Both teams shot 47% from the floor. NIC had 30 points inside the paint and 9 points from their bench. Bonds for LCC ended the half with 16 points and NIC was led by Nate Pryor’s 12 points.
Lane built their lead to 53-46 early in the second half. As the half wore on the Cardinals began chip away at the lead with good ball movement and timely offensive rebounding, which led to open shots that they started to knock down cutting the lead to one. But Lane responded with a 5-0 run to get the lead back to 66-62.
Rayquan Evans and Nate Pryor began the NIC comeback to tie the game at 70. NIC went on a big run to take the lead 78-70 with 3 minutes to go. Lane cut the lead to 78-76 but could get no closer.
NIC was led by Pryor’s 25 points followed by Rayquan Evans with 18points. Lane was led by Tarik Cool’s 24 points, Bonds, 19 points, Hounshell 13 points, and Lucas Wilson with 12 points.]
North Idaho moves on to tomorrow’s championship game at 4:45 and will play the winner of the Walla Walla vs. Spokane game.
