Everett Wins First Women's Cross Country Championship

Battle Ground, WA - The Everett Trojans women's cross country came into Saturday's championship meet playing the part of the underdog, hiding behind Spokane's success the past three years. However, when the starting gun went off, the Trojans quickly shed their underdog status and asserted their dominance on the meet. At the half-mile mark, two Trojans, Shawn Schooley and Valerie Massey had a good sized lead on the following pack.

As the runners made their way across the bridge and up the hill, Everett runners had commanding control of the top three spots and two more in the top ten. Clark's Brittany Henderson and Spokane's Kelly Turner were locked in battle for fourth while trying to close the gap to the leaders.

At the finish, Everett finished off their outstanding performance by sweeping the top three spots and placing two more in the top ten. Schooley won the individual championship in 18:23 followed by teammates Massie and Kelsey Loomans. Clark's Brittany Henderson was fourth followed by Spokane's Kelly Turner.

Schooley's winning time of 18:23 is the third fastest ever in NWAACC history and is the fastest ever at a NWAACC championship meet held at Lewisville Park.

Everett's team score of 23 is the fifth lowest in NWAACC history.

This was Everett first NWAACC Women's Cross Country Championship since they started competing in 2007.

Everett's Head Coach Matt Koenigs and Spokane's Sean McLachlan were named Co-NWAACC Coaches of the Year.
