Pierce College to add Women's Cross Country in Fall of 2019
WOMEN’S INTERCOLLEGIATE CROSS COUNTY
COMING TO PIERCE COLLEGE
Pierce College and Raider Athletics are pleased to announce the addition of Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country, beginning in Fall 2019. The new Women’s Cross Country program will be the eighth intercollegiate sport offered at Pierce College, joining women’s soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball, and men’s soccer, basketball, and baseball.
“We are extremely excited to bring Women’s Cross Country to Pierce College,” said athletic director Duncan Stevenson. “The new sport will provide a great opportunity for the many high school runners in the greater Pierce County area to continue participating at the college level. Our Lakewood campus is located next door to one of the premier cross country courses in the State, at Fort Steilacoom Park, which will be the site for the 2020 NWAC Championships.”
Pierce College is a member of the Northwest Athletic Conference, a regional association of 2-year colleges from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. The new Raider Women’s Cross Country team, along with the new program addition at Chemeketa Community College, will join fellow NWAC member programs at Clackamas, Clark, Everett, Green River, Lane, Mt. Hood, Olympic, Southwestern Oregon, Spokane, Treasure Valley, and Umpqua.
The first day of official practice is August 1st. The team will compete in a full schedule of invitational meets during the Fall season, concluding with the NWAC Championships in November. Partial athletic scholarships may be available for selected team members.
New and current students who have participated in cross country or distance track in high school, or at a competitive level, and are interested in trying out for the team, or have questions about the program, can contact the Raider Athletic Department for more information (253- 964-6612, or [email protected]).
