Arizona State University and Green River alum Broc Johnson fall just short of NCAA golf championhips
Max Rottluff and Broc Johnson (Green River CC) both had good scores, but the Arizona State men's golf team fell one spot short of its goal of a trip to the NCAA Championships as it finished at 6-under 858 and in sixth place at the Columbia Regional, which finished Saturday afternoon at The Club at Old Hawthorne (par-72/7,141 yards).
Oklahoma State, Arkansas, host Missouri, LSU and Iowa State will advance to the NCAA Championships May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
Rottluff (71-67-73) and Johnson (74-69-68) tied for 14th at 5-under 211 as Johnson had seven birdies on the day. Rottluff had 15 birdies and an eagle in the 54 holes on the weekend.
Sophomore Jon Rahm (73-75-68) shot even-par 216 and had six birdies on the back nine on Saturday. Rahm ends his sophomre year with 22 eagles in his 83-round career.
Dating back to 1993-94 when Golfstat started tracking college statistics, only three other Sun Devils posted 15 eagles in their careers as 2003 NCAA champion Alejandro Canizares had 15 eagles in 152 career rounds, while Scott Pinckey (121 rounds) and Niklas Lemke (151 rounds) had 16 eagles in their career. He finished with a 70.84 stroke average in 37 rounds, the fourth-best mark by a Sun Devil in the past 21 seasons (1993-94 to present).
