Under Armour Men's Golf Player of the Tournament
Spokane - Sophomore
Derrick Phelps, Zillah HS / Zillah, WA, shot a 2 under par 68 on day 1 of the Grays Harbor League Match followed by a 1 under par 69 on the final day to win by 2 strokes to claim medalist for the tournament which included all NWAC teams.
"For the Sasquatch to defend the title and consistently place near the top in tournaments this season, Derrick is to be counted on to contend to win golf tournaments, commented CCS head coach Scott Kramer.
"He did just that in the first conference event of the season. He shot a smooth 2-under par, 68 during round 1 and backed it up with a 1-under par, 69 in round 2. Derrick found himself even par for the day and tied at 2-under par total for the tournament with 2 holes remaining. On the par 4, 11th (his 17th hole), Derrick hit a 3-wood down the middle to 157 yards from the flag stick. He stuck an 8 iron to about 10 feet to the right and slightly above the hole. He hit the back of the cup with his birdie putt and at the same time the player he was tied with, bogeyed his 17th hole. Phelps made an uneventful par on this final hole to secure his first collegiate victory.
Not only is Derrick an accomplished golfer and team leader, but he is a top notch student in the classroom."
