A native of Brazil, Jose-Luiz Barbosa ran on Lane's track team in 1986 setting school records in the 800 meters, 1500 meters and the 400 meter relay team.

Barbosa also competed for Brazil in the Olympic Games in 1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996. In 1991, he was ranked as the top 800 meter athlete in the world by Track & Field News.

Barbosa won gold medals at the 1987 World Indoor Championships and 1995 Pan American Games. He also tallied silver medals in the 1983 Pan American Games, 1989 World Indoor Championships and 1991 World Championships.

Barbosa is now the cross country and Track and Field coach for Granite Hills High School, in El Cajon, California.
