He went on to run at Brigham Young University where he was an All-American and NCAA Division 1 National Champion in the 1500m. While a member of the U.S. Naval Air Corps, Gene developed desert and mountain survival programs for the Navy jet pilots. He incorporated survival training into an innovative clinical treatment program and the University of Utah, which is known internationally as a creative and cost effective mental health program design.
