Class of 1992
Henry “Hank” Muyskens spent 44 years at Olympic College as a professor, baseball coach, and timekeeper for men’s and women’s basketball. He began teaching math part-time at the college in the 1951-52 school year, taking on a full-time position by adding physics in 1958.
Fellow inductee Phil Pesco asked Hank to join his men’s basketball coaching staff in 1958. "I asked for a couple days to think about it," Muyskens once said, "But I realized right away that there was no way to assist Phil Pesco. He did everything and he did it well.” Pesco then asked if he would assist with the scoreboard, a request Muyskens accepted. Muyskens retired from teaching in 1992 but continued to run the scoreboard until 2002. At his retirement, Muyskens estimated he had seen nearly 1,300 games in his 44 years sitting courtside.
He worked as an assistant baseball coach at OC under Harry Russell during the 1960s and early '70s, doubling as a scout for the New York Yankees during that time period. "He's just very loyal to OC athletics," said athletic director and former men's basketball coach Barry Janusch. "His roots are here. He's from here and I think it's something he has really enjoyed."
Muyskens graduated University of Washington in 1950. He played one year of both baseball and basketball along with serving in the Navy ROTC while at UW. After graduation, he accepted a teaching position at Meridian High School and then returned his alma mater, South Kitsap High School in 1951, where he taught full-time until 1958. He coached both baseball and basketball at South.
Muyskens passed away in 2002.
