Dr. Walt Johnson

Walt Johnson started his lifelong education career as a high school teacher/coach before moving into higher edcuation as an administrator at Clark College in Vancouver, WA. Dr. Johnson moved to Spokane in 1963 to become the first President of Washington Community College District 17. He was responsible for building the programs and facilities at both the Spokane Community College Mission campus and at Spokane Falls Community College in the 1960's.

Dr. Johnson was a strong advocate for student programs and was the main person responsible for building the strong athletic programs at Spokane. His support for building athletic facilities, funding athletic programs and hiring successful athletic directors and coaches laid the foundation for the successful athletic programs to follow.

The SCC Sports Center was named the Walter S. Johnson Sports Center in 1988 to honor his legacy. Johnson has been named to the CCS Hall of Fame and the NWAACC Hall of Fame Roll of Honor.
