Spokane Women capture second NWAC Soccer Title

TUKWILA, WA -- The Spokane Sasquatch defeated the Highline Thunderbirds 2-0 on a clear but chilly afternoon at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, WA.
The first goal came early for Spokane in the 12th minute off of a brilliant strike from Sarah Melvin, assisted by Alysha Overland. This Melvin's 14th goal of the season and Overland's 11th assist.
Highline had a few opportunities to equalize the game, but perhaps the most dangerous was delivered from Sophomore Michelle Day that got past the keeper but just missed wide of the left post.
Spokane controlled the ball for the remainder of the game and sealed the win from an Alysha Overland goal in the 80th minute, assisted by Maison Stults. Overland recorded her 29th goal of the season, setting the single season goal recorded for Spokane, and earning Most Valuable Player honors for the game.
Sarah Melvin was named the Most Inspirational Player by Spokane head coach Jim Martinson.
For Highline, the Thunderbirds finished the season as the West Region Co-Champions, 17-4-1 overall record, and 2nd in the NWAC their, highest finish since 2003.
Spokane finished the season as the East Region Champions, an overall record of 16-2-1, and their first NWAC Women’s Soccer Championship since 2006.
