Former Highline College Faculty & Hall of Fame Tennis Coach Margie Command Passes

Margie M. COMMAND ( Margie Mignon Command), 78, passed away on September 20, 2011 in Federal Way, Washington. She was born on May 17, 1933 in Seattle, the daughter of John and Margery Rouse. She was raised in Yakima, Washington. After graduating from high school, she attended Yakima Community College, earned a BS degree from WSU, and earned a MEd from Central Washington University.

When teaching junior high school she met another junior high teacher, Edward M. Command, and they were married on August 5, 1962. She taught nine years at the junior and high school levels before being selected as the women's physical education and health teacher at Highline Community College in the fall of 1964. She retired from Highline in June, 2000.

She enjoyed teaching physical education and found even more pleasure teaching adult community college students. She was very strongly committed to developing athletic competition for girls and women and took great pride in being selected into the NWAACC Hall of Fame for her early work in creating and supporting athletic programs for community college women.

She enjoyed outdoor activities including gardening, tennis, boating, fishing, and clamming. After retirement many months were spent on the boat in the San Juan Islands and traveling to many places across the world. She spent a month in Australia and a month in New Zealand in 2001, visited Singapore, Japan, South Africa, and several trips to Great Britton and Western Europe. She cruised through the Panama Canal, around the Hawaiian Islands, to the capital cities of Scandinavia (including St. Petersburg), in the Mediterranean, and from London to New York. Her favorite traveling place remained the Hawaiian Islands, and during retirement most winters were spent there. There will be no public services. Please sign the online memorial at
